Calibrating Speaker Workshop

Setup

To start using Speaker Workshop, the first thing I do is connect the line-out of the soundcard to the Jig input and the jig output lines to the line-in of the sound card. I set the jig so that it uses the Z input and the reference resistor is shorted (middle Ref setting). This sends the input to both channels identically.

Then I set the volume on the mixer to the appropriate levels. I do this by

1) Create a new generator resource - I call mine Basic. Set it to a sine wave at 1000Hz (the frequency is not critical).

2) Perform a record operation with volume set to 50 ( half-way).

3) Ensure that the input value (Basic.in.l and Basic.in.r) are about +-16000. If they are not, adjust the mixer levels (wave out, output, and line-in record) until they are. I try to make the output level pretty high and set the input level accordingly. My mixer (for the PCI512) looks like this:

Note that I set the line output value to 0, to avoid any feedback loop that may occur from line-in. Also note the record device is set to "Line".

After tweaking, the screen looks like (for a 2 second record and play time). Note there is so much data that it just looks like a black bar. If you zoom the charts way in you can see the sinusoidal recorded waveform.:
